Nasty Nelson: High IQ Play or Cheap Shot?
The "Nasty Nelson" is a controversial, but legal, pickleball shot. The idea is to hit your serve at the opponent at the net. When done correctly, your serve will hit the opponent's body and win you the point. Although effective, this pickleball shot is at the center of controversy.
Many people believe that this serve targets a person, not the court. This can feel hostile, especially in recreational play. A hard serve to the body can sting or leave a mark. That’s not what pickleball is about for many players. Even though the sensation is similar to getting smacked with a ping-pong ball, it obviously doesn't feel very nice. This shot can also convey a sense of arrogance that many people would prefer to go without. If you hit this shot against strangers, they may not want to play with you in the future, so I recommend that you think before using this shot.
Now that you've read one side of the Nasty Nelson, here are some reasons in favor of the nasty nelson. One reason is that it’s unexpected. It can be a game-changer in tight matches. This shot is risky, but brilliant when executed well. You win the point immediately. No need to worry about dinking. This shot also punishes poor positioning and lack of awareness. If the non-receiving player is crowding the center line or zoning out, a well-placed Nasty Nelson is a wake-up call. This shot can turn the tide of a game. Landing one can rattle the opposing team, allowing you to get inside their heads. This can mean the difference between winning and losing. How? Because the more confident people play, the better they play. When you are playing with confidence, you don't think, you just do. Getting smacked with a ball definitely throws you off. I speak from experience :).
As someone who thrives on strategy and precision, I respect the Nasty Nelson as a tool. There are definitely certain times and places for Nasty Nelsons. One example is when I play with close friends. If we notice that someone at the net isn't paying attention, we'll send a rocket at their head. Then again, I only do this with my friends. If you're thinking about hitting a Nasty Nelson, read the room first. In a tournament? Fire away. At a local rec game? I'd think twice. If you can dial in your Nasty Nelsons, you will be able to control your opponents in a way that not many people can.
